Thursday 24th may | apart from him

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

john 15:5

a thought for the day

It’s the last week of Jesus’ life. He knows the next few days are going to be the most painful agonising and important days of his whole ministry, and in all of human history. He chooses this moment to give his disciples and his future church a bit of a pep talk. This inspirational talk spans from chapter 14 through to 17 of John and contains a lot of well known verses such as “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (16:33) and “I no longer call you servants . . . instead I have called you friends.” (15:15). It’s like the half time talk that a football manager gives his team, it’s the important rallying call where people hang on every word. In this Jesus says, ‘apart from me you can do nothing’. At first that sounds quite disconcerting, but when we look into it, it’s actually freeing. He’s speaking about vines and branches which for people in 1st century Palestine was a staple subsistence, then using this well known plant Jesus says everything that we do originates in him, apart from the vine there are no branches and apart from Jesus whatever we do doesn’t have any meaning. So how does all this talk of horticulture help you during exams? Look to Jesus today, invite his Spirit, pray and then commit every single moment of revision to him as worship, before long you’ll be producing lots of fruit. Although it might not feel like it now, revision can be worship if you see it that way. This turns exam period on its head – it’s not a slog to get through but a sacrifice to give to God, a song to praise him.

Study Space is running from 22nd May to the 7th June every Tuesday – Thursday from 9 till 5. It’s a space to revise and study for the exams with free tea, coffee and biscuits and the chance to pray with the staff team at 9am and 3pm.

Come along to STC Sheffield for Study Space this Exam Period.
