Tuesday 22nd may | the power of love
Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame.
Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot sweep it away.
If one were to give
all the wealth of one’s house for love,
it would be utterly scorned.
Song of Songs 8:6-7 (NIV)
a thought for the day
On Saturday it was the Royal Wedding, a preacher relatively unknown to the British public was asked by the bride to do the address after the scripture was read. He was given 6 minutes to preach, 14 minutes later he had the crowd in awe after talking about the power of love. It’s been the talking point of the day but this passage in Song of Songs is what kicked it all off. ‘It’s Tuesday morning’, you might think, ‘what has the power of love got to do with my exam tomorrow?’. The answer: everything. It says in this passage that ‘love is as strong as death . . . unyielding as the grave.’ If love is stronger than death, then it’s definitely stronger than fear, fear of exams, of assignments, of failure. Fear and love don’t coexist together; 1 John 4:18 says ‘There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.’ So a good prayer for today as exams kick off is “God, remind me that I’m loved by you today”, that should do the trick. Of course praying this won’t solve all of life’s problems but knowing you’re loved goes a long way. So I hope today you experience the power of love as you’re bogged down in revision and hoping the end of exams comes soon.
Study Space is running from 22nd May to the 7th June every Tuesday – Thursday from 9 till 5. It’s a space to revise and study for the exams with free tea, coffee and biscuits and the chance to pray with the staff team at 9am and 3pm.
