It’s not all about your clothes and your saucepans.
1. Laptop and Phone
Not only helpful for your studies, but the best way to stay connected with friends – old & new.
You’ll add so many people on Facebook and collect tons of numbers – so these are helpful to keep track of messages and events.
Exercise might not be your go-to during Freshers Week, or ever, but a pair of trainers is always helpful in Sheffield. While you’re here take a trip to the peaks, visit the Botanical Gardens, or walk out to Forge Dam.
We all know food is an essential part of life, but don’t just rely on your stock of beans and pasta. Save some of your cash to explore Sheffield through restaurants, cafes and bars. Division Street, in between town and UoS, is full of independent places and has some great coffee on the go.
If you’re anything like me it’s good to have something to remind you of home.
Also, you’ll probably want some things to cover the bare walls in your halls.
5. Sense of Adventure
At Uni you never know what’s around the corner, so try to put yourself out there and talk to new people. Say Hi to people in your lecture theatre and see if they want to grab a coffee.
6. An Open Mind
Students come from all sorts of place and backgrounds that are different to yours. Not everyone will share your opinion, or they may even talk about things you’ve never heard of. Take time to listen to people and see if you get on, you might be surprised.
7. Alarm Clock
Whether on your phone or a literal clock they’re extremely useful, there will be a day when you oversleep. Trust me, bursting into your lecture 20 mins late and still feeling half-asleep is not something you want to repeat.
One of the best people I met in first year was also one of the sassiest. She didn’t let people pressure her or push her around. I learnt a lot from her – she’s still a sass-queen. Don’t be forced into anything you’re not comfortable with.
9. Toilet Roll
It may sound silly, but it’s always a must. Buying toilet roll can easily slip of your shopping list, or maybe your housemates always forget, you just don’t know, but you definitely don’t want to be without.
You don’t have to tell everyone you meet your life story, but be real with your self and with other people. It makes everything a lot easier and you can have way more fun.
You don’t have to take everything seriously. It’s cheesy, but make sure you have FUN.
